Our research project, The Tobacco, Health and History Project, wins the 'Research Project of the Year: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences' category
I was delighted to learn that the project I have been working on since it's start in 2020 won this year's Research Project of the Year: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences category at the Times Higher Education Awards. We were simply excited to be shortlistedfor such a prestigous prize and attend the awards ceremony in Edinburgh, so it was quite a shock to win the award!
The Tobacco, Health and History Project, run by Dr Sarah Inskip, looks at the impact that tobacco had on health when it was first introduced to Europe in the 1500s. Using our results, we have run school education initiatives to influence children's understandings of the health risks of tobacco in all its forms.
The project's funding period came to an end on 31st October of this year, so this was the perfect round-off to an amazing five years of exciting research, fantastic collaborations, and work with some truely awe-inspiring colleagues. We are now transitioning to a focus on tuberculosis, using some of the cutting-edge techniques developed in our first project.
