Providing training for volunteers at the Teffont Archaeology Project
Today, I made a trip to Wiltshire to deliver a workshop on osteoarchaeology to volunteers at Teffont Archaeology entitled 'Reconstructing Past Lives'. The workshop provided an introduction to osteoarchaeology, the methods we use, the data we collect, and the ethics behind what we do. As well as getting to grips with putting back together a (plastic) skeleton, attendees also had a go at reconstructing the stories of different ancient people using the information obtained from a fictional skeleton, their gravegoods, and burial type.
I have been working with Teffont Archaeology for several years to deliver annual reports on the human remains recovered from their Roman Shrine site at Teffont. While I've never had to get my hands dirty in the field for this project, it felt great to give back to the volunteers who recover much of what I look at in the lab! The day was incredibly fun, feedback from the workshop was really positive, and it was a great opportunity to test out new workshop ideas!
